William Gray, the 65-year-old police officer with the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia who was arrested Sept. 9, 2011, and charged with the theft of more than $2 million worth of numismatic dollar coin errors, has been sentenced to three years in jail and three years of subsequent supervision.

He will also be required to disgorge two homes, seven cars and sundry personal property,
U.S. District Court Judge Noel L. Hillman took the guilty plea from Gray, sentenced him Sept. 24 and on Sept 28 finalized details of forfeiture and terms of imprisonment – a series of three-year concurrent sentences. Gray needs medical care and the plea deal he struck asks the Bureau of Prisons to take that into account.
U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Paul Fishman, prosecuted the case and announced that Gray received about $75 for each error coin he is claimed to have purloined.
The meaning of this is clear: that about 32,000 coins were removed, evidently over some period of time.
